Leon: The Professional

Over the holidays I had watched numerous thriller films that I had enjoyed but I particularly liked Leon: The Professional (1994) -a professional assassin who ends up looking after a 12 tear old girl after her parents are killed and teaches her his killer skills- because of the characters, filming and this very intriguing story line.

Camera : Throughout the film I had noticed they used many wide, long and establishing shots of New York city as the pair (Leon & Matilda) would walk up a hill and appear from the top. Personally I felt they were very powerful shots of the scenery and almost mirrors their relationship and lifestyle as they move from one location to another.

Wide shot of Matilda & Leon

I also particularly liked the use of depth of field during some scenes, for example at one point Leon was lying on the floor as he had been shot so there was a close shot focused on him then switched to a shorter depth of field and showed him giving a ring top to a grenade to the man overlooking him, additionally you had the match cuts throughout which were really good as well. This I felt emphasised the drama more instead of plainly filming a close up or over the shoulder.
