False Plateau - When the audience is lulled into a false sense of security and relief which works through visceral effects, to make us feel tense, relaxed then shocked!
The Stepfather, at one point during this film contained an example of false plateau when next door neighbor Mrs Cutter is trying to find her cat in the cupboard. Her cat then unexpectedly jumps out in front of her deceiving the audience to think it's the stepfather, giving us some sort of relief, however little did we know that the stepfather was waiting to strike her from behind. Putting the audience into shock!

Bomb Theory
Alfred Hitchcock'c 'Bomb Theory' lets the audience know more than the characters on screen allowing the
audience to feel more engaged.
During the film we find Micheal (stepson) & Kelly (his girlfriend) trying to catch David Harris (stepfather) out in his parents room by looking through draws and valuables. We are constantly cross cutting back and forth from the pair and David who is on his way back to the house, creating the bomb theory where the audience can see all that is happening besides the characters creating major tension, frustration and you may find sometimes the audience shouting at the screen!
