Conventions of Film Openings are deliberately set up in the beginning of each film to establish a film, introduce the main characters and credits the directors, producers etc.
Conventions(in no particular order):
- Production Company Idents
- Distrubition Company Idents
- Music associated with thoses Idents.
- List of credits - Directors, actors, casting, producers, screen writers etc.
- Title of film
- Establishing shots
- Where the film set/location
- Introduction of Characters.
In lesson, there was 2 film openings we focused on, both with different approaches.
The Talking of Pelham 1 2 3.
The Talking of Pelham 1 2 3 follows the Conventions of film openings. We as a class was able to identify the location because of the establishing skyline shot of NYC and the famous New York Subway which was included in the opening.
Psycho (1960) |
Classic Opening. Classic Opening has a different approach to the general Convention of film openings. Old films like Physco (1960) follow the classical opening.
- Animated credits.
- Production Idents
- Skyline/City Scape shots.
- Close up of a buliding
- Close-up of a particular window
- Introduce the main characters
Both openings has its disadvantages, classical opening has a slow pace, which will bore the audience. The modern Convention of a film opening has a fast pace opening, but everything might be given away in the opening of the film, so what about the rest of the film?
